A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that most doctors will face a medical malpractice lawsuit against them during their medical careers.
This threat of being sued leads many doctors to practice what is called defensive medicine, which means that they order extra tests and procedures to double check the diagnosis that they make on their patients.
The study examined data from 1991 to 2005 and estimated that nearly 99 percent of doctors that are in “high-risk” fields have had a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against them by the time they were 65. In what are considered “low-risk” fields, the number was still at 75 percent. Most of the lawsuits did not result in monetary payments, only about 1 in 5 did.
