RESIDENT FALL LEADS TO $15,000 NURSING HOME FINE

By Daniel Finney

A resident’s fall at an Iowa nursing home has lead to a $15,000 fine after the resident was allegedly on the floor for an hour with a head injury while staff members were at a Christmas party.

Records show that the woman was walking down the hall in the All American Restorative Care and she fell backward causing her to hit her head on the floor. The home’s staff did not see the woman fall, but the monitoring system shows the staff walking around the nursing center.

Forty-six minutes after falling, the woman was helped back into bed. She was later taken to the hospital for the head wound and had to receive four staples in her head. Inspectors stated that the two staff members walked up to the nurse’s station later and were within view of the woman and failed to help her.

Officials with the home stated that this woman was “combative” and laid on floors often. The nursing home has been fined $15,000 for substandard care, officials with the nursing home are appealing the case.
