A Belleville woman was driving a minivan filled with five children between the ages and 5 and 15 between Scott Air Force Base and Southwestern Illinois College when the vehicle was struck head-on by an SUV.
The 17-year-old driver of a SUV was traveling east when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic. The Belleville woman was stopped in the left westbound lane waiting to turn behind another vehicle when the SUV collided with her minivan. This caused a chain reaction with the vehicles waiting to turn behind the minivan. The collision involved five vehicles.
The teenage driver of the SUV was cited for improper lane usage. The woman driving the minivan suffered a lacerated liver and two broken ankles. She was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital where she is being treated. Of the five children traveling in the minivan, only one suffered a broken collarbone. The others have been treated and released.
