A firefighter was killed during a maintenance test when a coupling failed while testing a fire hose and it struck the firefighter in the head.
The 19-year-old was wearing bunker gear at the time of the accident. Emergency medical respondents performed first aid on the man and he was then flown to Erlanger Medical Center in order to be treated.
According to officials, when the hose was put under pressure, one of the couplings failed. Luckily, the man was wearing a safety helmet and goggles, which prevented his injury from being more severe. Routine checks are done frequently at this fire station in order to make sure that the equipment is functioning normally.
