Drivers in the Thursday morning commute complained that the weather made the roadways slippery and dangerous. Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation stated that they did not feel that the roadways needed treatment because it would not have helped and they continue to defend this decision.
Officials have stated that black ice caused multiple accidents on the way to work this morning. One accident, that occurred on Interstate 55 just after 8 a.m, took the life of one man. By the time rush hour struck, officials stated that there were accidents at almost every intersection. Missouri DOT were putting salt on the roads between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.
As temperatures continued to drop they added more to the roads and by the time they realized they needed another, accidents had already begun. Highway Patrol stated that most of the accidents resulted in minor injuries.
