A barge worker was killed when trying to rescue a family that was drifting down the river in a fishing boat.
According to police, the incident occurred near downtown St. Louis when a family with two adults and three children were fishing and their boat ran out of gas, causing it to drift down the river. A towboat saw the boat and two barge workers got into a rescue boat to help them.
After the barge worker handed a small child to safety, the boat capsized in the current and went underneath the barge. The two barge workers were later pulled from the water.
According to St. Louis Today, one worker suffered minor injuries, while the other suffered later succumbed to his injuries. All family members in the boat were rescued and did not suffer any serious harm.
