The Center of Disease Control has recently stated that the contamination of Listeria bacteria in cantaloupes may be the worst food-borne outbreak in recent history. Thirteen people have been killed and nearly 72 have been sickened as a result of it.
The illness has been reported in 18 different states across the nation and officials have warned that the recalled melon may still be in pre-cut fruit salad and in refrigerators.
The number of reported illnesses and death may increase within a few weeks because the incubation period before symptoms show can be up to four weeks. The melons were recalled on Sept. 14 and were made in Colorado under the Rocky Ford brand name.
