A fire at a chemical plant broke out at 2:30 a.m. on Monday and caused the evacuation of nearly 500 people.
Areas of Highway 44 were also closed after the fire broke out at Chemisphere Corp., a solvent distributor. The people who were evacuated from their homes were not let back in for nearly 6 hours.
It took firefighters almost three hours to get the fire under control and it is estimated that nearly 10 percent of the plant has been damaged in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
